The Rose Corporation wins BILD’s Best Community Award for its King George School Lofts and Town Homes development in Newmarket

Toronto, July 22, 2022 – The Rose Corporation won the prestigious “Best Community, Built” Pinnacle Award for its King George School Lofts and Town Homes development at the 2022 BILD Awards.

Dan Berholz, The Rose Corporation’s President and Partner commented “The Rose Corporation is incredibly proud to receive this notable recognition of the community created by the King George School Lofts and Town Homes project. From the beginning our team worked closely with the Town of Newmarket and community stakeholders to help transform one of Downtown Newmarket’s oldest and most beloved heritage properties. It has been remarkably satisfying to see it all come together and to be recognized by BILD with this award.””

The King George School building was built in 1912 and was Newmarket’s oldest learning institution functioning as a primary school until 1983. After more than 100 years, the King George School building enjoyed a long-deserved restoration as part of the project by turning the vacant schoolhouse and two adjacent abandoned bungalows into 11 condominium lofts within the old school building surrounded by 14 two-storey freehold town homes.

“On behalf of the Town of Newmarket, we would like to sincerely congratulate The Rose Corporation on this very meaningful and prestigious BILD award,” says Newmarket Mayor John Taylor. “There is no better example than the King George development to demonstrate how to perfectly blend old and new. Rose Corp worked tirelessly to preserve the historic and heritage elements of one of Newmarket’s significant landmarks, the King George School, while transforming it into a refreshed development that perfectly complements the downtown area and is just steps away from our bustling, award-winning Main Street. Thank you to the Rose Corporation for leading the way and showing us this kind of development is possible.”

Speaking further to the neighbourhood, Development Manager on the project David Bannerman notes “King George has really been a harbinger for further development and desirability to live in the once gentrifying historic downtown. Newmarket has quickly risen as one of the most walkable, vibrant, and complete communities in Ontario.” The Rose Corporation looks to expand on this community building philosophy in Newmarket with three state-of-the-art residential buildings under construction near Yonge and Davis Drive.

BILD’s “Best Community, Built” award recognizes an outstanding built community that embodies the principles of the Province’s Places to Grow legislation. Eligible communities must be vibrant and complete communities that make the best use of land and that allows live, work and play spaces; protect, conserve, enhance and wisely use the natural resources of land, air and water; and optimize existing and new infrastructure to support growth.
